My latest client project was to use Wordpress, and needed a forum to match. I’ve used phpBB and Wordpress together previously but it did leave something to be desired, so I set off in search of something a bit more integrated.

Soon I stumbled upon bbPress, the forum by Automattic (the Wordpress guys) and the same one used for the WP support forums. This was definitely going to be easy. (more…)

For a long time I’ve been a big fan of pointless holidays and celebrations. Yeah, I’m a fan of most pointless things, but especially this.

One of my past jobs was as an administrator for around 30 people. Every day without fail I would find an appropriately silly holiday and send out a department-wide email informing people of any specific celebrations they should partake in. For the most part my little obsession was tolerated with a weary smile, but a handful of my colleagues really got into the idea, culminating in an otherwise respectable rail engineer and tram enthusiast coming to work with an inflatable parrot.

One particular colleague was so enthusiastic about the whole thing, she encouraged me to start a mySpace group for the purpose of collecting all the holidays in one place. The group lasted for about half a day and hasn’t been updated since, but the principle was sound. (more…)

Since I’ll soon be famous and everyone will want to know every minute detail of my progress with the site, welcome to part 1 of what will no doubt be a long and awe-inspiring look behind the scenes of it’s construction.

Oh my, that’s much harder than I expected.

At the moment this blog is all alone in the world, cast out into the cold with no surrounding site to comfort it on these long winter nights. This was never my intention, I was determined to launch my entire site at once and wow the entire internet with my ingenuity. Yeah, right.

So far the site has worked it’s way through 3 complete redesigns. One of them almost made it live but I pulled the plug at the last minute due to an inconveniently timed flash of inspiration. (more…)
