We’ve all been there.

You know you’re unlikely to find anything that pays more than $4 an hour, but work is thin on the ground and you’re feeling optimistic. Thirteen hours later you’ve watched 8 seemingly sensible buyers fall for the cut and paste bids, had 2 people tell you you’ll never make it in freelancing unless you halve your rates, and made exactly 0 pennies.

I’m sure there are some people who make a good living out of these sites but if you, like the me of a year ago, feel that freelancing sites are your best bet to get some portfolio work, read on. (more…)

My first forays into web design were for purely practical reasons. I needed a site, had no money, and the only friend of mine capable of doing it was too busy. Therefore, I thought, why not?

I still remember the pride I felt at completing that first site, though looking back on it it was fairly ugly it was still my baby and will always have a special place in my heart. Surprisingly, after the stress of getting that first site live and having actual people actually use it without it breaking (oh my that was scary!), I realised how much fun I was having and set about learning everything I could get my grubby little hands on. Oh my, that’s much harder than I expected.

At the moment this blog is all alone in the world, cast out into the cold with no surrounding site to comfort it on these long winter nights. This was never my intention, I was determined to launch my entire site at once and wow the entire internet with my ingenuity. Yeah, right.

So far the site has worked it’s way through 3 complete redesigns. One of them almost made it live but I pulled the plug at the last minute due to an inconveniently timed flash of inspiration. (more…)
